ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Here at Greenscape Gardens, they are expecting a big crowd with the first warm and dry weekend we’ve had in a while.
And while temperatures are warming up, it’s still pretty early in the month of April, so some caution is needed when it comes to overnight temperatures.
According to Beth Kusmin, an expert in annuals, the most common question she receives from her customers is whether they can plant everything they currently purchase.
“Right now we’re advising people that anything above 45 degrees we’re good. That does depend on the type of flower. If it has just come from the greenhouse and has been warm and toasty in here, they’re going to be not as hardened off as, what, like snapdragons and things like that we already have out,” Kusmin said.
For annuals, you may plant them in pots that are easy to manage if temperatures do fall to a potentially damaging level.
“It is a game of in and out in and out but it’s okay because hopefully in the next week or two we’re going to be out permanently and stay that way,” she said.
If you aren’t going to plant this weekend, there are still things you can do to prepare.
“Because of all of the rain that we’ve had, that’s really loosened up the soil so it’s really easy to pick newly formed weeds. They’re smaller; their root system hasn’t developed. So if you’re going to get out this weekend in your yard, that’s a great thing to do,” Kusmin said.
