POTOSI, Mo. – Bethany McCoy was shocked to see around 11 dogs dumped onto her porch on the outskirts of Potosi Halloween night.
“The other night the dogs set off our house alarm; they were jumping on our glass door so hard,” McCoy said.
Doorbell camera video showed when the unexpected visitors arrived, but it did not show how they got there. The dogs have not gone far since.
“A lot of barking at night,” McCoy said, “A lot of notifications of them coming up and sleeping on the porch.”
The dogs are not unfriendly, but they’re very skittish and also very hungry. They’re often hiding under an abandoned trailer nearby.
They’ll run out when they sense the chance for food, like when McCoy’s aunt, Carla Glatczak, pulled up. They’re concerned someone may run one over as they roam for food.
“It’s raining. They’re wet. They’re soaked. They need food,” Glatczak told us. “I have tried numerous rescues. We both have.”
McCoy adds that she’s a quarter mile outside Potosi city limits, so animal control won’t help. She says police even tried intervening.
“They got in touch with animal control themselves and were told that even if they were in city limits, they are doubled up with dogs in cages and they wouldn’t be able to pick them up,” McCoy added.
FOX 2 double checked with Potosi Animal Control, but nobody picked up the phone and nobody was at the pound. We also noticed stray animals on Animal Control’s property.
We also checked with several area rescues, none of whom had a solution.
“Everybody is overfilled. There’s no room for them,” Glatczak said.
Potosi Animal Control did show up later to try taking in a couple of the dogs, since so many neighbors had called seeing dogs roaming the roads.
