ST. LOUIS – A high school student remains hospitalized after being shot during a robbery near his bus stop in south St. Louis.
The shooting happened around 7 a.m. near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Potomac Street in the Gravois Park neighborhood, according to St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Mitch McCoy.
The 19-year-old victim was waiting for the bus when two people approached and demanded his cell phone, McCoy said. There was a scuffle, and the suspects shot the victim.
Video taken by someone in the area shows the moments immediately after the shooting. The victim can be seen on the ground after he’d been shot as police and others arrive at the scene.
Police said the victim is expected to survive. Random strangers stayed with the victim before paramedics arrived. The school bus driver is the person who called 911.
“I heard like five or six gunshots; really loud,” said one resident, who asked not to be identified. “It’s not really unusual to hear some in the neighborhood. But then I heard those, got really scared, and I looked out the window and saw the victim on the ground
The shooting has left many residents in the area shaken as police continue to search for those who pulled the trigger.
“We’ve had a number of shootings there,” Virginia Kraus said. “A young man was killed, and another one was shot a couple of times and now this situation here at the end of the block. It is very scary.”
The victim’s family members said he’s a student in the St. Louis Public School District. FOX 2 News reached out to the district for a statement. We have yet to hear back.
