MISSOURI – Demand for homes has held strong in recent years, and the price tags for the best of the best homes keep climbing, even in lower cost-of-living states like Missouri.
Realtor.com recently unveiled a list showing how much money is required to “buy a luxury home in every state.” In many states, the most expensive homes can easily reach seven figures.
In Missouri, the threshold for a luxury home is still six figures, but it’s a lot closer to seven figures than you might think.
According to Realtor.com, as of January 2025, the average price for a “luxury home” in Missouri is $913,737.
Realtor.com also determined that homes priced at or above this threshold come with an average monthly payment of nearly $4,800. For homebuyers, it is also recommended to have a household income greater than $192,000 to afford such a home.
To determine these figures, Realtor.com economists examined the top 5% of homes by price currently on the market in each state, calculating the average cost of properties in that group.
Keep in mind, one’s standard of a “luxury home” could vary widely across the country. For some, it may mean proximity to scenic features like lakes, beaches or mountains. For others, it could mean a spacious home with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms or high-end kitchen and flooring finishes.
Missouri was one of 13 states where the luxury home threshold is still under $1 million. In comparison, West Virginia has the lowest threshold ($749,648) while New York tops the list ($5,488,510).
