ST. LOUIS — A two-phase winter weather system is set to impact Missouri this week. St. Louis is in the transition zone, and that may have a significant impact on Wednesday’s snowfall forecast.

Winter storm wave #1

The first wave will bring light snow to far southern counties late tonight and Tuesday, with minimal impact to the metropolitan St. Louis area. Accumulations will range from a dusting to 2 inches south of a line extending from Cuba to Festus and over to Salem, Illinois.

Winter storm wave #2

The second system, expected midday Wednesday through Wednesday night, promises more significant disruptions. This storm will deliver a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the region, with potential challenges for travel.

Precipitation patterns will vary by location. Areas north of Interstate 44 in Missouri and northwest of Interstate 70 in Illinois will likely experience primarily snow. The metro St. Louis region can anticipate a snow and sleet mixture, with some freezing rain possible. Southern areas may see primarily freezing rain or cold rain.

Preliminary snowfall projections:

  • Northern regions: 5-7 inches
  • Metro St. Louis: 1-3 inches of snow and sleet mix

Meteorologist Chris Higgins cautions that the storm’s track remains uncertain. Minor shifts could significantly alter precipitation types and volumes. School administrators are facing some tough decisions about closures and virtual learning.
