ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. — The Illinois Department of Transportation will close 3.5 miles of Interstate 255 for six months starting Saturday.
IDOT will be resurfacing the interstate between Illinois Route 157 and Illinois Route 15. The project will also improve safety, lighting, signage, drainage improvement, and bridge upgrades along the interstate.
According to IDOT, the six-month closure will prevent a two-year-long project and protect construction crews from drivers and traffic in the surrounding area.
The work on the project is expected to be completed on July 31. Drivers should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes during the closure.
The six-month project is part of a six-year plan IDOT is implementing to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and around 9 million square feet of bridge deck. The project, also known as Rebuild Illinois, is investing $33.2 billion into improving all modes of transportation.
Around $10 million for the I-255 project was paid for by taxpayers out of $65.4 million total.
