WATERLOO, Ill. – First responders are at Gardner Elementary School after at least a dozen students got sick while practicing for a spring play. There may be more students who need medical attention inside the school.

The school district tells parents that the school is being evacuated and that all students are safe. EMS is keeping an eye on a few of them.

Parents are being told to stay away from the building until they can evaluate it. The sickness may be related to a gas leak or something else.

It is not clear why some of the fourth graders fainted. An investigation is underway into the cause of the incident.

The school says that the evacuation is precautionary. They were concerned with, “kids in proximity with each other feeling ill.” The school day is expected to resume once they have approval from EMS or utility workers.

This is a developing story. More details will be posted here as they come into the FOX 2 newsroom.
