ILLINOIS – Illinois residents can now file federal taxes directly with the IRS online for free.

Following a successful pilot program in 2024, the IRS made Direct File a permanent tax filing option for eligible taxpayers in 25 states. However, Missouri is not one of the participating states.

Direct File supports many common tax situations, including wage income from jobs reported on a W2, Social Security income, pension and annuity income, and more.

The service also supports several tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, the Child and Dependent Care Credit, and others.

The program supports deductions for student loan interest and Health Savings Accounts
as well.

Direct File is available in English and Spanish. To qualify, you must have lived and earned your income in Illinois in 2024.

You must also plan to use the same filing status for both your federal and state income tax returns.
