ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis police officer critically injured last week on Interstate 70 could be leaving the hospital in the next couple of days.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reported Officer Nathan Spiess underwent a third surgery on Monday. Spiess, 31, is resting after a successful surgery, police said.

According to an SLMPD statement, the medical team taking care of Spiess expects he’ll be discharged soon.

Police will provide an escort to take Spiess to a private location where he’ll continue his recovery.

On March 17, Spiess was struck by a vehicle on I-70 while attempting to arrest a suspected car thief. Spiess suffered severe injuries to his right leg, requiring the limb to be partially amputated.

This was the second time Spiess had been injured in the line of duty. In January 2022, Spiess and a partner were shot while pursuing a homicide suspect in north St. Louis County on Jan. 26, 2022. Spiess was shot once in his leg, while his partner, Colin Ledbetter, suffered gunshot wounds to his groin and foot.

Both Spiess and Ledbetter returned to duty in April 2022.

The driver who struck Spiess and the suspected car thieves who fled police have been arrested and charged.
