ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A beloved Kirkwood diner has reopened after new owners took over the restaurant following its closure in June. According to St. Louis Magazine, Spencer’s Grill reopened its doors to customers on Nov. 8 after it was initially shut down quietly by its previous owners in the summer
Spencer’s Grill, located at 223 South Kirkwood Road, had been a Kirkwood staple for more than 75 years before it was closed back in June. Michael and Meredith Shadwick, owners of Kirkwood’s Honey Bee’s Biscuits + Good Eats and Tropical Moose Shaved Ice, partnered up with Kirkwood resident Michael Kleckner to bring the diner back to life. Although updates have been made, the spirit in the diner remains.
One of the new changes includes waffles and French toast being omitted from the menu. Instead, new additions have been made, featuring the new French toast biscuits, a new breakfast sandwich combo, and a new omelette combo.
The diner is set to bring back signatures like the slinger, juicy lucy, and scrapple at a later date, while the favorite country fried steak will now make occasional appearances on the menu.
The reopened diner also made slight changes to the prices on the menu. The diner will use the same coffee blend from La Cosecha, which is used at Honey Bee’s, and will no longer serve fountain soda. Instead, the diner has opted to serve canned soda, reducing drink prices by 75 cents to $1. To adjust to changes in the products, the diner slightly increased its menu items by 50 cents to $1.
Although slight changes have been made to adjust to the diner’s reopening, the soul of Spencer’s Grill remains intact as the new owners accepted the opportunity to provide customers with the same experience they had been missing since the Kirkwood staple closed in June.
