ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A St. Louis County mother has filed a lawsuit against a catering company in response to a recent E. coli outbreak that has impacted dozens of people.

The St. Louis County Health Department confirms a total of 94 cases of E. coli strain 0157. More than half are linked to Rockwood Summit High School, where there were four catered banquets.

In the meantime, Jennifer Cumbus, a mother from Fenton, has filed a new lawsuit against Banquet Enterprises, Inc. for negligence. According to court documents, a person identified as “A.M.” consumed food catered by the business on Nov. 8 and began experiencing symptoms two days later.

The lawsuit describes “A.M.” as a female who has suffered severe pain, been unable to eat or drink, and continues to face serious health issues. The suit is seeking unspecified damages.

The health department released a statement about their ongoing investigation. “The health and safety of our community are our highest priorities,” said Kanika Cunningham, Director of the St. Louis County Department of Public Health. “Our dedicated team, including epidemiologists, environmental health inspectors, and communications staff, has been working around the clock to investigate this outbreak thoroughly and effectively.”

Andre’s Banquet and Catering is the company that provided food for the events at Rockwood Summit. They also issued a statement saying the health department found no issues during a facility inspection and took a sample of their salad, with test results expected this Thursday.

The company adds that two students diagnosed with E. coli did not eat their food, suggesting the source may be broader than first thought.

The health department continues to work closely with the Rockwood School District as they investigate the outbreak.
