Man charged after allegedly disarming officer, causing gunfire

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. – A man is facing several charges after a police investigation escalated in Belleville.

Illinois State Police were called in to assist the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities were checking on a child’s well-being at a home on South 15^th Street. Police say 28-year-old Chase Powers disarmed an officer, causing a gun to go off.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.

After a thorough investigation, the St. Clair County State’s Attorney filed six charges against Powers, including attempted murder and aggravated battery of a police officer. Powers remains in custody at the St. Clair County Jail.
