SOULARD – Local businesses are gearing up for one of the biggest weekends of the year—from bars to restaurants and shops.

It’s more than a party in Soulard; it’s a big economic boom for local business.

With all the decorations going up, thousands are coming to flood the historic neighborhood, bars and restaurants.

The Friday mayor’s ball kicks off this weekend’s festivities, and many are expected to let the good times roll as they crowd into the streets of Soulard.

“We have regulars who come in and book VIP service from different states,” Paige Bequette said. “And then, we also have for our community here. It’s really great for our economy.”

Molly’s in Soulard ordered extra shipments of beer and food, expecting record sales.

The chef is also getting in on the action with Cajun-inspired dishes flying off the grills.   The kitchen is working overtime and all hands are on deck.

The celebration will help contribute to the overall economic vitality in the area; meanwhile, Mardi Gras organizers want everyone to have fun, but also want to ensure a safe environment.

Individuals can expect to see more officers on foot, with Soulard Mardi Gras being one of the biggest outside of New Orleans.

“We know for a fact that about 25% of our visitors are on Grand Parade day are from outside the Saint Louis area,” Mack Bradley said. “We are filling hotel rooms all across the region. This is obviously a big day for the businesses, but we also know it’s a big day for restaurants and other establishments all over the region.”

The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday from Busch Stadium and proceeds through Soulard; the event ends at Lynch Street.
