ST. LOUIS – Temperatures are feeling much better, just in time for a full weekend lineup in Soulard where the streets will be packed with people enjoying some of their favorite Mardi Gras traditions.

When the icicles melt outside Stew’s Food & Liquor in Soulard, the interior is ruled by roux.

“(Mardi Gras) is always something that no matter how much you prepare for, there’s always something coming at you,” Nate Burrows, the owner of Stew’s Food and Liquor in Soulard, said. “That’s kind of what makes it fun.”

This will be Stews’s second year participating in the Taste of Soulard, becoming one of many places serving up their style of Cajun cooking.

“Soulard Mardi Gras really does have something for everyone, and this weekend really exemplifies that,” Bess McCoy, one of the organizers, said. “Whether you’re coming down to run, eat, cheer or just soak up the good vibes, it’s a family-friendly atmosphere.”

Soulard Mardi Gras is not only just for locals to enjoy, as the Purina Pet Parade kicks off at 1 p.m. at 12th and Allen streets this Sunday.

With the melting snow and ice from this weekend’s warm-up, they’re keeping your pooches’ paws protected.

“The city has told us that they are using a pet-safe brine on that route. We’re really grateful to them for thinking about our four-legged friends this weekend,” McCoy said. “We’re excited for the warmer weather, but you’re definitely going to want to dress for the weather.”

If you plan to participate in these upcoming events, it may be beneficial to have waterproof shoes or snow boots due to the abundance of snow piles, slush and slick spots in the area.
