ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – The family of Archie Green, 71, spent Veterans Day making funeral arrangements for their loved one. Green, a military veteran, was struck and killed on Nov. 6 in a hit-and-run, according to police.
Family members gathered to honor Green on a holiday that holds special meaning for them.
“Normally on Veterans Day we get together and take my dad out to eat,” Monica Whitfield, one of Green’s five daughters, said. “He taught us to stick together no matter what, and you know he really loved his grandkids.”
Green meant the world to his family, which included nine grandchildren.
Whitfield and other family members are encouraging the driver to turn themselves in. They want more done to slow down drivers and would like to remind pedestrians to wear reflective clothing at night.
The St. Louis County Police Department is handling the investigation. An accident reconstruction team was called to the intersection of New Halls Ferry Road and Sugar Pine Drive at approximately 8:40 p.m. last Wednesday to investigate.
The initial findings of the investigation determined Green was in the roadway when he was struck by a motor vehicle that left the scene. The driver has yet to be located.
Green lived nearby in an area where some residents say many seniors walk to access nearby services.
Jonathan LaGrone lives nearby and has witnessed dangerous driving. He expressed condolences to the family of Green and hopes drivers will slow down, adding that dangerous driving has consequences.
“People have been hurt,” said LaGrone. “People have been killed.”
“People are always just kind of flying up and down the street,” Clinton Hunter, another nearby resident, said. “They don’t pay attention to the stop signs or stop lights.”
Police would like anyone with information in this case to contact the St. Louis County Police Department at 636-529-8210. The department’s investigation is ongoing.
Nearby resident Jach Quinn was distraught to learn the victim was a veteran.
“It makes me upset because they did so much for our country,” he said.
