WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bob Onder, R-Missouri, introduced a bill on Tuesday seeking to end the use of fetal tissue of aborted fetuses for research.
In a statement made on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Rep. Onder said legislation, the Protecting Life and Integrity in Research Act (H.R. 2075), can end taxpayer support for any research that uses fetal tissue that was obtained from an abortion.
“(This bill) would also close any loopholes in the law allowing for the use of body parts obtained via abortion in federally funded research projects,” Onder stated on X.
Onder’s bill, co-sponsored by 23 House Republicans, would not restrict fetal tissue collected from miscarriages or stillbirths.
Onder claims the Biden administration removed restrictions on human fetal tissue from the Trump era, along with an ethical advisory board.
“The creation of a taxpayer-funded marketplace for babies lost to abortion is a monstrous, barbaric practice,” Onder stated. “Every baby, including those lost to abortion, deserves to be treated with human decency and respect—not like raw material for science experiments.”
Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Mississippi, and eight of her colleagues have introduced a companion bill in the Senate.
Onder’s predecessor, Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, introduced a bill by the same name in 2023 under the 118th Congress. That bill was referred to the Subcommittee on Health, where it remained.
