MISSOURI – In 2023, Missouri experienced 259 floods, ranking it as the 4th highest state in the country to experience flooding, according to a LendingTree Insurance study.

California, New York and Texas ranked as the top three states to experience the most flooding before Missouri.

Across the board, the U.S. experienced nearly 29% more flooding in 2023 during flash floods, hurricanes and storm surges. Between 2022 and 2023, the country experienced 6,509 flood events in 2023, compared to 5,052 in 2022.

Illinois ranked 17th with 128 flood events in 2023, according to the study.

Last year was the 3rd most expensive year for flood damages in the U.S., coming in at $9.3 billion in damages.

According to the LendingTree study, as spring and summer storms pick up, homeowners should think about getting flood insurance early and making renovations to their homes to prevent or reduce potential damage. Renovations can include installing wind-resistant windows and impact-resistant roofing.
