ST. LOUIS – Voters across Missouri are heading to the polls Tuesday for the general municipal election.
One of the most closely watched contests is the St. Louis City mayoral race. Mayor Tishaura Jones is seeking a second term, facing off once again against 8th Ward Alderwoman Cara Spencer in a tense rematch.
Jones narrowly defeated Spencer in 2021, but Spencer won the March “approval voting” primary by a wide margin, with 68% to Jones’ 33%. A recent Missouri Scout/Remington Research poll showed Spencer with a 24-point lead heading into election day.
In addition to the mayor’s race, the city’s comptroller position is also on the ballot. Longtime incumbent Darlene Green faces a challenge from State Representative Donna Baringer. That same poll shows Baringer with a narrow edge, though still within the margin of error.
Also on the ballot: Four contested Board of Aldermen seats and three open positions on the St. Louis Public Schools Board of Education. The school board race follows months of controversy surrounding student transportation, leadership turnover and district finances.
Polls open at 6 a.m. and will remain open until 7 p.m. Voters must present a valid photo ID, such as a Missouri driver’s license, passport or military ID. Anyone in line by 7 p.m. will still be allowed to vote.
