TOWN AND COUNTRY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Transportation is expecting road conditions to worsen overnight Tuesday into Wednesday as the snow continues to fall. The department is closely monitoring road conditions across the entire state.
FOX 2 stopped by MoDOT headquarters near Interstate 64 and Missouri Route 141 in Town and Country, where they are able to monitor road conditions through real-time cameras.
As the night progressed Tuesday, those cameras showed various scenes involving stalled vehicles across the St. Louis area. But MoDOT’s cameras to the southwest, in places like Rolla and Springfield, where more snow had already fallen, showed much worse conditions. Similarly, MoDOT reported more accidents to the southwest.
The department opted to treat the roads after the first wave of snow Tuesday out of fear treating them too early would cause a dangerous re-freeze. There was also concern the treatment would blow off of the roads due to the conditions.
While the department is confident in its strategy, it is warning motorists that road conditions are expected to be poor early Wednesday, and to stay off the roadways when possible.
