ST. LOUIS – With snow back in the forecast for Monday morning, the Missouri Department of Transportation is preparing for what could be a slick commute.

As we know, it does not take much snow to make things slick. Just an inch of light, dusty snow could cause trouble for everyone as they head back to work and school after the long holiday weekend.

Check FOX 2’s traffic map for real-time updates.

MoDOT crews will be out overnight to pre-treat roads, but cold temperatures pose a major hurdle. Road salt loses its effectiveness when temperatures are below 28 degrees. The cold will be well below that number, meaning bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads could become slick very quickly.

When snow falls during traffic hours, MoDOT trucks struggle to navigate the congestion and treat roads before conditions worsen.

Federal highway statistics indicate that snowfall during peak commuting hours more than doubles the risk of car accidents.

Our FOX 2 meteorologists are projecting snow between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. MoDOT is advising drivers to drive slowly, leave extra space between their vehicles and other cars, and be prepared for slick spots on elevated surfaces.
