ST. LOUIS – The National Weather Service has updated its advisory system to better reflect dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills. This new ‘Cold Weather Advisory’ replaces the previous ‘Wind Chill Advisory.’

With temperatures dipping into the single digits and wind chills making it feel as low as 10 below zero, the Cold Weather Advisory highlights the dangers of these frigid conditions. This update provides more comprehensive warnings tailored to our area’s climate and emphasizes the need for extra precautions.

Here are a few tips for protecting yourself and your family during the bitterly cold weather, courtesy of the Official Missouri State Website:

Dress in Layers

Start with a base layer made of wool or silk to retain body heat.

Add loose-fitting clothing, a hat, scarf, and mittens (which are warmer than gloves).

Choose a wind-resistant outer coat to block the cold.

Limit Time Outside

Keep trips outside as short as possible.

Frostbite can set in quickly on exposed skin, especially with wind chills this low.

Stay Dry

Wet clothing accelerates heat loss and can lead to hypothermia

Prepare Your Vehicle

Pack an emergency kit with blankets, water and non-perishable food

An ice scraper is always good to have on hand

Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

Let cold water drip from a faucet to prevent freezing.

Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around exposed pipes.

If you or someone you know needs shelter, warming centers are available. Call 2-1-1 or visit 211helps.org/warming-sites for nearby locations.
