WASHINGTON, DC — St. Louis rapper Nelly took the stage at President Donald Trump’s Liberty Ball, sparking criticism from fans and fellow entertainers.
Responding to the backlash, Nelly explained that his performance wasn’t about politics or influencing opinions. Instead, he viewed the invitation as an honor and a way to celebrate what he calls “the greatest country on the planet.” The rapper emphasized that his decision was rooted in respect.
Nelly also pointed out that he’s faced criticism in the past for his artistic choices, including his 2004 country crossover hit with Tim McGraw.
During the event, a narrator introduced Nelly by highlighting his background. Born on a military base, Nelly comes from a family with a history of service. The introduction celebrated his journey, saying, “Only in America can you go from the streets of St. Louis to the White House.”
