CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo. – A 29-year-old Perryville man is dead and another man was left seriously injured Monday afternoon after a fatal accident on Interstate 55.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) crash report, the accident happened on southbound I-55, 9 miles north of Jackson, involving a Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Avalanche.

MSHP says the accident occurred after the Ford Ranger traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck the rear end of the Chevrolet Avalanche, causing the Ford to overturn.

The passenger in the Ford Ranger, a 29-year-old Perryville man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the crash report. The driver of the Ford Ranger, a 28-year-old Perryville man, was transported to a nearby hospital in Cape Girardeau, suffering from serious injuries.

According to MSHP, the driver of the Chevrolet Avalanche did not suffer an injury from the crash. The driver of the Chevrolet Avalanche was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while both occupants in the Ford Ranger were not.
