ST. LOUIS – St. Louis police are releasing the name of a police officer critically injured in the line of duty earlier this week.

According to Mitch McCoy, a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman, Officer Nathan Spiess was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 70 while attempting to arrest a suspected car thief. Spiess suffered severe injuries to his left leg, requiring the limb to be partially amputated.

Spiess, 31, is resting at the hospital after undergoing a second surgery on Tuesday. He has six years of experience with the SLMPD.

The family has requested privacy as they prioritize his recovery and long-term well-being.

This is the second time Spiess has been injured in the line of duty.

In January 2022, Spiess and a partner were shot while pursuing a homicide suspect in north St. Louis County on Jan. 26, 2022. Spiess was shot once in his right leg, while his partner suffered gunshot wounds to his groin and foot.

Both Spiess and his partner returned to duty in April 2022.

On Tuesday, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office announced charges against the driver who struck Spiess as well as the driver Spiess and his colleagues were chasing after.

City prosecutors charged Mehki R. Campbell, 18, of East St. Louis, with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, aggravated fleeing a stop, and resisting arrest.

Frank Carr, 62, of St. Louis, was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident – physical injury and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
