EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Prairie Farms Dairy, an Illinois-based dairy cooperative, has acquired the SmithFoods manufacturing facilities in Orrville, Ohio. The change is effective immediately, with both companies committed to maintaining uninterrupted operations.
Founded in 1938, Prairie Farms Dairy is one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the Midwest and South. It includes over 600 farm families, 7,000 employees, and 47 manufacturing plants. The company reported annual sales exceeding $4.69 billion.
SmithFoods, established in 1909, is an Ohio-based family-owned company.
“The SmithFoods acquisition was an easy decision because the Orrville facilities complement our network of dairy plants and expand our Ohio footprint,” states Matt McClelland, CEO/EVP of Prairie Farms Dairy.
“We deeply appreciate everyone who has contributed to the success of SmithFoods. By passing the torch to Prairie Farms, we are confident that their commitment to our shared values, community, and industry will ensure the continued success of our business for generations to come,” added Nate Schmid, President/CEO of SmithFoods.
The acquisition aims to strengthen both companies’ farm-to-table approach. No immediate changes to manufacturing, delivery services, or other daily operations are expected.
