POTOSI, Mo. – A pregnant dog was the final survivor, rescued from a pack of dogs we first told you about Nov. 4.

A Potosi family said someone dumped them nearby. Doorbell camera video showed where dogs found shelter on a porch on Halloween.

Bethany McCoy called FOX 2, hoping our report would lead to animal rescue groups saving the dogs. But not only were many shelters full, this was also a tough operation because the dogs often ran through thick brush in order to hide under an abandoned trailer.

“They would run out to eat to hang out in the yard, and then if something scared them away, they were back to the trailer till they were ready to come hang out under the porch again,” McCoy said.

The Humane Society of Missouri stepped up, making about five separate trips to bring most of the dogs to safety. Sadly, several were hit by cars and killed.

“We did save seven,” McCoy said. “Which I think is more than a lot of people would have done, and whatever puppies she’ll be able to have at the Humane Society–they’ll be safe and cared for as well.”

Her family adopted one of the dogs.

“We named her Lilly,” McCoy said. “We realized there was no way we could let her go to anyone else.”

Six others are now at Humane Society of Missouri headquarters on Macklind Avenue.

Director of the Animal Cruelty Task Force, Ella Frank, told us, “We got the last one yesterday, and indeed she is pregnant, so the vet will give her an exam, evaluate her, and hopefully get her healthy.”
