ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – St. Louis County officials are asking for $40 million to re-pave subdivisions.
Patchy roads and crumbling curbs are scattered throughout Craig Hills subdivision in west county. The Department of Transportation and Public Works says it is a problem all around the area.
“We’ve identified a list of several dozen subdivision streets in unincorporated St. Louis County that have significant pavement issues,” Public Information Manager Dave Wrone said.
The department compiled a list of dozens of subdivisions where roads have been given a rating based on a pavement conditions survey. Craig Hills was given a 2.7 rating out of 10 and a price tag of $1.6 million to fix.
Subdivisions on the list are spread throughout the county, including in north county, where councilwoman Shalonda Webb’s district is located.
“There’s no ongoing funding for subdivision roads or subdivision streets throughout St. Louis County, especially unincorporated,” she said.
She is helping put up a bill that would allocate $40 million in Rams settlement money for subdivision maintenance.
“The quality of life is important out here, and we want to make sure that these issues are handled. The potholes have been an issue so much, and the way we have been remedying those potholes has not been longstanding,” she said.
DOTPW would use the money for concrete and asphalt pavement, curb repair, sidewalk repairs, and crosswalk safety improvements.
“We have substantial needs throughout our system, and this won’t be a panacea for all of those needs obviously, but $40 million would be very much appreciated and useful,” Wrone said.
The subdivision roads with the worst rating would get priority. The roads in Craig Hills are 17th on the list.
