EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – A Bond County, Illinois, man was sentenced Monday for injuring a family in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 70.
The crash happened just after 5:15 a.m. on Nov. 30, 2019, in Madison County.
Kyle T. Heimsath, 36, had been driving the wrong way on the interstate with the lights off and stopped his vehicle. A minivan collided with Heimsath’s vehicle. The minivan was occupied by an Indiana family on their way home from visiting relatives in Missouri.
Investigators determined Heimsath’s blood-alcohol level to be 0.249, more than three times the legal limit.
Heimsath pleaded guilty in February to one count of aggravated DUI. At Monday’s sentencing hearing, members of the Indiana family gave victim-impact statements to the judge, describing injuries and ongoing traumas suffered as a result of the crash.
The Madison County Circuit Court judge sentenced Heimsath to six years in state prison.
