CLAYTON, Mo. – A St. Louis County man appeared in court on Wednesday after allegedly attacking his neighbor with sickle.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department’s probable cause statement, the attack took place on August 6 in the 100 block of Valley Park Drive, located in an area southwest of the Interstate 44/Highway 141 interchange.

Police said Eugene V. Hayden Jr. (age not provided) was staying in his home after the bank had foreclosed on the property. The bank had not evicted Hayden from the residence.

Hayden’s neighbor, the victim, purchased the home at an auction on July 11. Hayden still refused to leave the property.

The victim told police he saw a truck carrying mulch pull up to the home and dump it on the lawn. When the victim went outside to speak with the truck driver, Hayden allegedly confronted the victim while carrying a sickle.

Police said Hayden chased after the victim, who retreated to his car. Hayden allegedly stuck the sickle through the driver’s side window and struck the victim in the head.

The officer who met with the victim noticed the victim had a golf ball-sized abrasion on his forehead.

Police spoke with Hayden, who said he did go after the victim with the sickle but stated he only hit the vehicle with the tool and not his neighbor.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Hayden with second-degree assault. Hayden was jailed on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
