ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis Metropolitan Police officer was left injured overnight Monday morning after being struck while attempting to conduct a traffic stop in north St. Louis.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD), the incident took place around 12:40 a.m. near Peck Street and Carter Avenue in north St. Louis’ Fairground neighborhood.
The incident occurred after officers interrupted a large number of vehicles driving recklessly at 9th Street & La Beaume Avenue, police said. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on one of the vehicles involved, the vehicle fled, starting a pursuit.
During the pursuit, officers deployed spike strips near Peck Street and Carter Avenue in an attempt to disable the fleeing vehicle, police said. After deploying the spikes, the suspect’s vehicle struck a marked police cruiser, injuring an officer who was exiting the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Following the crash, the injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital, suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The officer was later discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment.
The suspect involved in the crash, a convicted felon, was taken into custody after the crash, police said. Authorities have not identified the suspect in the incident or the officer that was injured during the pursuit.
