ST. LOUIS – The family of Dornea Hayes, 15, remembers her as being smart, outgoing, beautiful, and deeply loved by her family.
“I just want my baby back,” Maurreusa Wallace, Hayes’ mother, said.
She and other tearful family members stood together Tuesday, hoping video from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will lead to arrests for the murder of their loved one.
“I’m not going to say that it would make us feel a whole lot better, but it will close a door as far as getting some justice for her,” Wallace said.
It was May 21 when police responded to Miami Street and discovered Hayes had been shot in the head. More than eight months later, there are still no leads or tips that have led to any arrests.
“She’s not resting until we get justice for the people that took her life,” Wallace said.
She said her daughter left home and believes a friend she turned to is the one who led Dornea into trouble. Wallace does not know what led up to the shooting but hopes someone with direct knowledge will contact police.
Anyone with information on the case can contact the homicide detectives at 314-444-5371. Calls to the St. Louis Regional CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477) are anonymous and can be eligible for a reward.
Family members continue to wear shirts with photos of Dornea and think about her every day. Jade Grover, Dornea’s sister, said she still struggles to explain to her son why his aunt is no longer alive.
“He asks me every day when his auntie is coming home and I don’t know what to tell him,” Grover said. “I don’t know how to process this.”
