CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — A minor 2.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday at around 3:50 a.m. near Mill Creek, Illinois. The location is just east of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The earthquake happened at a depth of 7.8 miles.

While small and unlikely to cause damage, it serves as a reminder that the Illinois Basin – Ozark Dome Region, which includes parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas, experiences such seismic activity occasionally. This region, though less active than the nearby New Madrid seismic zone, has a history of moderate earthquakes and is crisscrossed by many known and unknown faults.
