ST. LOUIS – Snow is welcome for sledders to Art Hill during the winter, but it also brings headaches for small businesses.
“We had that snow on Monday—didn’t do us any favors. We struggle a bit with ‘Should we open?’” Andy Karandzieff, owner of Crown Candy Kitchen, said. “A lot of my staff lives further out. I made some chocolate and did some stuff, so I was a little productive.
For the Old North St. Louis business that was already closed Monday and Tuesday due to weather, a third day is hard and a reason why some are open despite Mother Nature’s best attempts.
Karandzieff used the slower day to start prep work for Valentine’s Day and Easter, recycling milk chocolate Santa’s to be turned into rabbits.
In the Grove neighborhood, the Gramophone was open for business for those who ventured out.
“This morning was rough, and it was whoever could get here safely go ahead and get here, and the rest of you get here when you can, and some of you, you don’t have to come in at all,” general manager Courtney Renfrow said.
Customers that came out got preferred seating and an experience they’ll remember.
