ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – A new subdivision in St. Charles County along Highway DD continues to be a hot-button topic.

“If the developer would approve three acres per home, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. They’re trying to put in tracked housing. Most of these homes are going to be 12 feet apart in the northern section,” Nate DeLuca, Citizens for Smart Growth in St. Charles County, said.

A portion of the new subdivision is moving forward after St. Charles County Council approved The Highlands at Busch Wildlife this week.

DeLuca is part of a group of residents speaking out against the Lombardo Homes proposal.

“Our group isn’t against landowners selling land. We understand that they’re going to sell their land and that’s their right. What we don’t want is a subdivision that doesn’t match the surrounding subdivision,” he said.

Lombardo Homes said construction on the 120 homes within the 136 acres of land could start next year.

The ratio of homes per acre is a big concern for residents like DeLuca.

“Every piece of property that this development or potential development touches is three or more acres. As proposed, this development only has a few three-acre lots,” DeLuca said.
