ST. LOUIS – St. Louis City is conducting a trash blitz this weekend as residents are fed up with overflowing dumpsters due to a winter storm at the beginning of the month.
FOX 2 drove throughout south St. Louis Friday and noticed dozens of dumpsters still filled to the brim with trash. City leaders say the ice makes it difficult for trash trucks to get through.
Despite the upcoming trash blitz, residents continue to wonder when their normal trash service will resume.
“Trash piled up…just everything you can imagine,” resident James Dixon said. “We have to find other trash cans so we can dump trash in.”
Spokesperson for Mayor Tishaura Jones, Connor Kerrigan, noted that crews are making progress this weekend and will be out the next few days, working to pick up as much as possible.
“This was a historic storm. We saw several inches of ice—it wasn’t safe for our crews to go out and collect this trash,” he said. “We’re going to have bulk pickup crews around every part of the city…we’ve seen the photos of overflowing dumpsters. We’ve gotten numerous CSP requests. So now that the weather is cooperating with us, we’re getting all of our crews out.”
But the intense frustration regarding how long it’s taken the city to pick up the trash lingers.
“This really makes our neighborhood look ugly,” Ty Lo said.
Residents continue to keep their fingers crossed for warmer temperatures so trash services can resume normally.
