ST. LOUIS – Hundreds of south St. Louis residents are fed up as trash piles up in their icy neighborhoods.
Residents on Bancroft Street say trash has been sitting in their alley dumpster for weeks. The alley still has patches of ice—which is one reason city leaders say is causing big delays in services.
“It’s inconsistent. We never know when it’s going to be picked up,” resident Maureen Horak said. “We’ll hear a truck come, and it might even go past us, but we never know when something’s being picked up.”
The city continues to plow streets that are covered with snow and ice, leaving many residents wondering when trash services will resume.
“We understand the frustration. Of course, we want your trash to get picked up. Unfortunately, when this weather came in, that created some delays for refuse drivers,” mayor spokesperson Ramus Jorgensen said. “We’ve picked up about 50% of trash. That’s obviously not where we want to be, so now we’re out there trying to catch up with that.”
Authorities add that the freezing temperatures have made streets difficult to maneuver.
“I understand that everybody’s fed up and there’s an aggravation, but there’s only so many containers. When there’s only so many containers, you know, the one house may have to go down three houses to throw the trash away.”
Some neighbors in the city say they’ve run out of room in their recycling containers as well. The City of St. Louis now has smaller trucks to salt narrower streets and says they’re doing everything they can to catch up, including having crews working on weekends.
