ST. LOUIS – After two years of extensive renovations, the historic Old Courthouse in Downtown St. Louis is now set to reopen this spring.
The Gateway Arch Park Foundation has announced the Old Courthouse will reopen on May 3, 2025.
The Old Courthouse represents nearly two centuries worth of St. Louis history. The new upgrades include its first elevator, improved HVAC and fire suppression systems, more office space and new historical exhibits.
“The Old Courthouse has been the site of some of the most pivotal moments in American history, and now it will offer visitors an even deeper connection to its past,” said Jeremy Sweat, Superintendent of Gateway Arch National Park. “With the new exhibits, enhanced accessibility, and structural updates, the Old Courthouse will continue to be a vital educational and cultural resource for generations to come.”
Crews are putting the finishing touches on the Old Courthouse’s second major renovation project, which came with a $27 million price tag. The landmark originally opened in 1862, though it has been closed to the public since 2020 due to COVID-19 impacts and ongoing renovations.
The Old Courthouse will mark its grand reopening on May 3 with a festival, featuring family-friendly activities, special remarks from dignitaries and interactive educational programming.
One new exhibit will be dedicated to Dred and Harriet Scott, highlighting the family’s fight for freedom and St. Louis’ role in the historic court case. Guests will also be able to visit a 1850s-styled courtroom, commemorating some of the earliest origins of the Old Courthouse.
