ST. LOUIS – Police Chief Robert Tracy is talking about two high-profile cases and the department’s ongoing efforts to combat crime in the city. He shares details about the shooting on I-55 that critically injured a teen and the arrest of a suspect in the abduction and murder of Michelle Hampton.
In the highway shooting case, investigators believe the bullet may have been unintended, striking Colin Brown, 16, through their front windshield. He is still healing from his injuries. Chief Tracy noted that evidence is being collected and processed, and the department is seeking public assistance through Crime Stoppers to help resolve the case.
Regarding the Hampton murder, Chief Tracy revealed that the arrested suspect is known to the victim’s family and was allegedly attempting to force the victim to withdraw money from ATMs. A second suspect in the abduction was arrested Tuesday. The investigation involved collaboration between local Clayton police, city authorities, and federal agencies, including the FBI.
Tracy says that homicide rates are now at a 10-year low in St. Louis. He praised the department’s officers for maintaining public safety while operating with reduced staff. He says that residents should feel confident about downtown safety.
