ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office has declined charges following an arrest in connection with a fatal dog attack last month.

On Jan. 15, a 62-year-old woman —who was deaf, according to her brother— was in her backyard in the 5900 block of Theodore Avenue, when three other dogs crawled under a gate and attacked her and her dog. The victim later died at a hospital while in surgery.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has identified the victim as Gladys Anthony.

SLMPD noted that a 54-year-old man was arrested on an involuntary maslaughter charge Wednesday in the investigation, though police say the Circuit Attorney’s Office refused charges “due to a lack of evidence.”

Mitch McCoy, SLMPD’s director public affairs and information, shared the following statement Thursday: “The death of Gladys Anthony is a complete tragedy and St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department detectives worked with the Circuit Attorney’s Office to carefully review the facts of the case. If any new evidence comes to light, SLMPD will review it and notify the Circuit Attorney’s Office.”

The St. Louis Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has not issued a statement on the declined charges as of Friday.

FOX 2 also learned earlier this week that three dogs involved in the attack have been euthanized.
