ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis woman is living with anxiety after surviving a terrifying ordeal last month. She had to drive herself to safety after being shot in the face prior to taking the on-ramp to Interstate 70 in north St. Louis.

Arnetta Thurman is sharing her story of resilience with FOX 2 News.

Thurman was on her way home from work around midnight on Feb. 10. She was carpooling with two coworkers and headed east on West Florissant Avenue toward I-70 when gunfire erupted.

“I was getting on a [I-70] and something just, like, hit me and hit my face and came through the window. I stopped the car and blood was gushing out, and I grabbed my face, and I looked at my friend and said, ‘I’m shot,’” she said.

Thurman said she’s fortunate to be alive to tell her story because the bullet traveled from one side of her face to the other side. Despite the severity of her injuries, she managed to drive several blocks before pulling into a gas station.

“I had get myself together and I went around the ramp, got onto the highway, and I’m just barely telling my friend like, ‘I can’t see, I can’t see’ and I’m still just trying to wipe the blood out of my face,” she said.

The other passengers in the vehicle were unharmed. Police do not believe Thurman and her coworkers were targeted. They’re still searching for the shooter.

“I can’t feel my teeth or my mouth on this side. So, I can’t feel like this tooth all the way back this way. I can’t feel that either. I still can’t open my mouth all the way,” she said. “I’m still having PTSD. I got anxiety real bad. I can’t really stand loud noises. I don’t like being in the car more.”
