ST. LOUIS – A teenager is in custody following a carjacking and high-speed chase across St. Louis on Sunday.
According to a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson, the carjacking happened at 10 a.m. at the BP gas station in the 200 block of East Grand Avenue in the Near North Riverfront neighborhood.
The victim, a 61-year-old man, told police he’d just parked alongside a pump and exited his vehicle when a red Dodge Charger quickly pulled up next to him and a young male got out of the Dodge with a gun.
The armed suspect pointed the gun at the 61-year-old and demanded his keys. The victim dropped his keys and backed away. Police said the armed suspect picked up the keys and drove off in the victim’s Chrysler 300 with the Dodge Charger following.
The victim was uninjured, police said.
An officer later spotted the Charger and Chrysler 300 speeding in the area of Interstate 70 and Tucker Boulevard. The officer activated his lights and sirens and pursued the vehicles on Tucker.
Police said the Chrysler crashed into a signal box at Tucker and Chouteau while the Charger got away. Two males exited the Chrysler and took off on foot. A 17-year-old male was apprehended in the 900 block of Lebanon Drive. The second suspect was able to escape.
The 17-year-old was taken to the hospital before being remanded to police custody.
Police later learned the Dodge Charger had been stolen in a carjacking earlier that morning in the 1300 block of Tower Grove Avenue.
