ST. LOUIS – Three teenagers are in custody following an overnight carjacking in south St. Louis.

According to a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson, the carjacking occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the corner of Idaho Avenue and Walsh Street, along the shared border of the Dutchtown and Carondelet neighborhoods.

The 51-year-old victim told investigators he’d just returned home from the movies and parked his vehicle, a gray Mazda CX50, when an unidentified male tapped on his window with a firearm.

The armed individual demanded the victim’s car, and the victim complied. The armed suspect and another person got in the Mazda and sped off. The victim was not injured.

About an hour later, police said officers on patrol heard screeching tires near South Grand Boulevard and Meramec Street in Dutchtown. Officers got to that location and saw the Mazda driving recklessly. Officers attempted to pull the Mazda over, but the vehicle fled.

The pursuit continued through several neighborhoods when the Mazda struck a curb and became disabled in the Columbus Square neighborhood between Hadley and North 11th streets.

Four teenagers ran from the Mazda and fled in different directions, police said.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy, was taken into custody, along with a 19-year-old man and 17-year-old boy. The fourth teenager escaped authorities. The suspects were uninjured.
