ST. LOUIS – A U.S. District Judge sentenced the last of three men on Wednesday in connection to the robbery of an armored car in 2023.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Missouri, Phillip Keith Smith, 65, Herman Leon Woods, 31, and David C. Greenwade, 62, robbed the driver of the vehicle in the 9400 block of Midland Avenue in Overland on April 14, 2023.
FOX 2 reported on the robbery last spring and revealed the act was done with police in sight. Surveillance video shows the men struggling with several apparent bags of cash before making unusual moves.
Reportedly, the three men admitted to robbing the driver of the armored car as the victim was making a cash drop at a store. Two of the men, wearing black clothing, ski masks, and body armor, pulled up the victim’s car in a black Jeep.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said another robber, who has not been identified, approached the driver of the armored car and said, “Don’t die over this money.” The suspect then pointed a handgun at the victim when he didn’t immediately turn over his own gun.
Then, the victim handed over his gun and ran into the store for help. Smith, armed with a short-barreled rifle, and the other suspect took a bag with $2,000 and a duffel bag with empty bank bags.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Greenwade was driving the black Jeep, which was owned by his nephew, Woods, and had planned the robbery.
Woods and Greenwade pleaded guilty to one count of robbery, and Smith pleaded guilty to robbery and one count of using a firearm during a crime of violence.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a separate case, Smith pleaded guilty to a money laundering charge and Greenwade pleaded guilty to a drug conspiracy charge. Both men admitted to helping sell illegal drugs and launder the proceeds.
Smith was sentenced to 11 years in prison; Woods received a 42-month sentence, and Greenwade received a 20-year sentence back in July.
