ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY, Mo. – Three women are in custody after an incident sent a Missouri Conservation agent to the hospital with wounds from a dog attack last week.

According to the St. Francois County Sheriff Jeff Crites, the agent was at Iron Mountain Lake on April 24 when he tried to conduct a stop for safety equipment issues. He was stopping Janet Shy, 66, and her daughter, Megan Stroup, 36.

While running a check, the agent noticed active warrants against Stroup. When he attempted to arrest her, Shy pulled him back, allowing for her daughter to flee the scene.

As the struggle ensued, dogs of nearby neighbor Susan Adams, 60, began attacking the agent. Adams and another individual stepped in to pry the dogs away, Crites said.

The attack left the agent with multiple lacerations and puncture wounds. He was transported to the hospital to treat the injuries and is doing well, the Missouri Department of Conservation said.

Officers later located both Shy and Stroup. Shy was found at a house nearby, also with a dog bite. Stroup was found hiding in a wooded area, and when she resisted arrest, the K-9 officer stepped in for a “defensive response,” according to police.

Both were treated for minor injuries before being transported to the St. Francois County Detention Center. As police discovered neighbor Adams had seven active warrants for her arrest, she was also taken to the detention center.

Stroup is charged with one county of second-degree assault on a special victim, assault on a police animal, and resisting arrest. Shy is charged with one county of second-degree assault on a special victim and resisting arrest.

The Missouri Department of Conservation released the following statement Monday morning regarding the incident, stating, “We want to send a huge thanks the Saint Francois County Sheriff’s Office and all other emergency responders who stepped in to assist during a recent incident involving one of our conservation agents. Their quick response and compassion were essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved.”
