ST. LOUIS – The Trump Administration’s federal cuts are taking a hit at a local attraction.

The Missouri history museum, located in Forest Park, announced that it is experiencing financial difficulties.

Jody Sowell, the president and CEO of the Missouri Historical Society—which operates the Missouri History Museum—shared an announcement on Facebook regarding the news.

According to Sowell, he notified the staff at the Missouri Historical Society, informing them that the museum’s approved National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) funding was cancelled.

The NEH funds were supposed to go to supporting the care of historic artifacts in the St. Louis area that have national and international recognition.

“Now is a time when our work is going to be more difficult, but it is also a time when it is going to be even more essential. People are going to need a break from the headlines. People are going to need places to find respite, intellectual stimulation and fun even as they might be cutting back on travel and entertainment,” Sowell told his employees.

Despite the federal cuts, Sowell said the Missouri History Museum remains committed to serving its visitors through entertainment and history.

“We provide those things in good economic times and in bad,” Sowell shared.

Museum officials expect another grant to be cancelled as well. And with cuts underway, Sowell calls for the community’s support of the Missouri History Museum and Missouri Historical Society’s efforts.

“I hope you will find ways to support our efforts, and I hope you know that we are here to support you by providing a space to connect and by protecting, preserving and sharing the St. Louis story,” Sowell concluded.
