ST. LOUIS – Polar bear twin brothers made their public debut Tuesday morning at the Saint Louis Zoo.

Kallu and Kallik can be viewed at McDonnell Polar Bear Point during regular zoo hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The twins were born at the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium in November 2022. They arrived at the Saint Louis Zoo in early March. In return, the Saint Louis Zoo sent Kali, its previous resident polar bear, to the Toledo Zoo to be paired with a female as part of a breeding program.

According to zoo spokespersons, Kallu and Kallik are an energetic, playful duo, who spar and chase one another during the day and often sleep side-by-side at night. Polar Bear Point includes a private care area not accessible to the public, which offers bedroom spaces, a denning area, and an outdoor off-exhibit habitat.

Kallu weighs 740 pounds and Kallik weighs 620 pounds. Zoo spokesperson said Kallik is the bolder of the two brothers while Kallu is more food-motivated.

Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are listed as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act because of a decline in population brought on by loss of sea ice from climate change.

In 2024, the Saint Louis Zoo launched its WildCare Institute Center for Polar Bear Conservation to protect the species through collaborative breeding programs, funding research, and working with Arctic communities.
