WEST ALTON, Mo. – Two controlled burns are underway Thursday afternoon near the Missouri-Illinois state line in northern parts of the St. Louis region.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting one controlled burn near the Audubon Center at Riverlands, while the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is conducting a controlled burn near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.
Controlled burns are generally efforts to manage vegetation and reduce wildfire risks in certain areas that are prone to dry brush or undergrowth.
As a result of these controlled burns, drivers may notice some unusual smoke in the sky near both locations. Crews have not reported any unforeseen issues with the controlled burns as of 2 p.m. Thursday.
