MADISON COUNTY, Ill. – Two horses standing on Interstate 255 were fatally struck by an SUV Thursday evening.
According to Illinois State Police, both horses were standing in the soutbound I-255 lanes between Vonnahmen Road and Fosterberg Road around 5:30 p.m. when the crash happened.
A 23-year-old female driving a Chevorlet Malibu swerved and missed the horses shortly before the fatal crash. The woman’s vehicle traveled down into a nearby ravine and struck a ditch. ISP said the woman reported no injuries.
Later that evening, a 69-year-old man from Norfolk, Nebraska, with a 62-year-old female passenger driving a Chevrolet Traverse struck the two horses. Their vehicle also traveled down into a nearby ravine and struck a ditch.
The 69-year-old and 62-year-old were both taken to the hospital with minor injuries. ISP said the horses were fatally injured due to the impact.
The southbound lanes on I-255 were reopened Thursday night at 7 p.m.
ISP said there is nothing further to report regarding this crash.
