ST. LOUIS – A University City man is facing five second-degree murder charges after a deadly crash that killed five people that happened back in 2022.

Jaylen Holland is the second passenger charged in connection and is the latest arrest in the case.

“The consequences of both sides of this particular case, where the consequences were just so fatal and tragic, as well as the consequences of just the defendant, are all very, very serious,” said Joel Schwartz, trial Attorney. “Schwartz does not represent anyone involved in the case but knows criminal cases very well. He helped explain a possible reason for the latest arrest from the horrific crash on Mother’s Day weekend in 2022.”

Court documents said Holland was found with a handgun in the backseat of a stolen Jeep that crashed into a minivan, killing four adults and a child.

Police said at the time officers saw a reportedly stolen Jeep weaving in and out of traffic on Delmar, then crashed into a grey Infiniti; the driver didn’t stop.

Officers say a passenger in the Jeep fired shots at the Infiniti before the Jeep crashed into the minivan.

Court documents said Marshawn Stepney was driving the Jeep. It also shows Walter Burton Jr. was found in the passenger seat with a rifle.

All three men are facing five counts of second-degree murder. Court records said Burton and Stepney are set to appear in court on May 1.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office said Holland is a flight risk and a danger to the community. A judge agreed and denied Holland bond.
