The United States Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery on Thursday, Jan. 9 as part of a national day of mourning to honor former President Jimmy Carter.
Carter died Dec. 29, 2024, at age 100, becoming the oldest former president at death. A state funeral service will be held Jan. 9 at Washington National Cathedral. Afterward, Carter’s remains will be flown back to his native Georgia for a private service and burial.

USPS facilities across the country will be closed and retail services halted. Only limited package deliveries will be made Thursday to ensure minimal disruption to overall service.
The USPS will resume regular activity on Friday, Jan. 10.
All USPS facilities will continue to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff through sunset on Wednesday, Jan. 29, to honor Carter.
